Echinacea is a traditional remedy, which has been used over the years for treating cold or flu. Although it is not regarded as a typical antiviral medicine, recent studies show that echinacea can be as effective as Tamiflu.
The main problem with Tamiflu and other antiviral drugs is that the risk of side effects is much higher compared to the herbal medicines. The herbal medicines can also lead to side effects, but the risk-benefit ratio is significantly lower for patients because herbal products are pure, natural form. Side effects of Tamiflu are nausea, dizziness, insomnia, flushing of the eyes and vomiting.
A new study published in the Journal Current Therapeutic Research from April 2015 revealed that the concentrated extract of echinacea root has a strong effect on cold and flu. Researchers compared the herbal extract of echinacea with Tamiflu.
Nearly 500 people exhibiting flu-like symptoms participated in the study, they were randomly given either echinacea extract or oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
Statistical analysis after application of both therapies showed no significant differences between the groups, which mean that the effectiveness of the herbal extract of Echinacea is similar to the effectiveness of Tamiflu at alleviating flu-like symptoms.
